It must be the doldrums of summer when I have to write about special effects work, but this bit done by the studio BlueBolt for the first season of Game of Thrones is pretty astonishing when you see what was actually practical and what was CG.
This was CG done right, and only served to heighten the magic and wonder of the first season. Why directors would choose to shoot against a complete green screen rather than real sets and locations is a mystery to me after seeing what actually can be done with very little. I guess these days you just have to chalk it up to being lazy.
