Meet the Alien from Super 8!

Portal 2's Interactive Super 8 Trailer!

The cross promotion here is just mind boggling. Portal 2  was released yesterday, and apparently hidden away within the PC version is a new trailer for J.J. Abram's Super 8 . Yet, this isn't your low-rez videogame tie-in, but a pretty looking and atmospheric bit of interactivity. This "trailer" places you presumably as one of the soldiers on the ill-fated train that releases the grouchy alien onto the world.

I say grouchy, because the roar at the end sounds like if the Smoke Monster on Lost  and the monster from Cloverfield  were doing the sideways tango. Nothing says "don't kill, bro" like angry monster copulation.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the modern day E.T..; even right down to the Amblin logo that prefaces the trailer, this is J.J. Abrams take on the boy-meets-alien movie that Spielberg perfected in the late 70's with Close Encounters and E.T... Hell, Spielberg is even producing the film which is set around the exact same time period as both of those films. 

The trailer will indicate, however, a much darker twist to this story. Instead of Reeses Pieces, it looks like this creature feasts on chaos and tears.  Abrams knocked the Star Trek reboot out of the park, and I am pretty convinced that anything the auteur has complete control over will be amazing; if Super 8 is as good as the early reports have indicated, we may be witness to the rise of Abrams as Spielberg's heir in the medium of film.
